Four members of the York University Lions field hockey team had two goals each and
Natalie Winter had four assists as the Lions earned a season-opening 12-0 win over the McGill Martlets Saturday evening.
The 12-goal spread marked the largest margin of victory since head coach
Zeeshan Minhas became the team's bench boss in 2012.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lions immediately began dominating the game creating chance after chance in the opening quarter. With the McGill defence being unable to cope with the Lions. York opened the game's scoring four minutes in with a goal by Prava Sandhu off a penalty corner.
- The Lions continued to pile up the pressure on McGill with Frankie St Louis scoring after Mackenzie Gee was fouled in the area. That made it 2-0 right near the end of the first quarter.
- The second quarter began with the Lions earning a penalty corner, being stroked home by Frankie St. Louis after a great assist by Prava Sandhu. The Lions didn't let up after that, seeing Winter and Nat Brown combine for the second goal of the quarter, scoring and assisting respectively from a penalty corner.
- Winter continued setting up her teammates, assisting Gee after a run saw a shot find the back of the net. Not a full minute later, York scored again. Prava Sanhu earned her second of the game, with an assist from Coral Anderson.
- The third quarter started in similar fashion with McGill conceding another penalty corner being scored by Alyssa Brooks after a Prava Sandhu assist.
- The fourth quarter saw the game become a little more competitive with the Martlets coming close but never finding the back of the net with Serena Vilde performing when she was needed by her team to maintain the shutout.
- The final two goals came in quick succession with Polly Campbell and Hazara Sandhu scoring from long range shots.
