LIONS FALL TO VARSITY BLUES IN 52ND-ANNUAL RED & BLUE BOWL

It was a gorgeous day on the grounds of Varsity Stadium for the 52nd annual Red and Blue Bowl between the York University Lions and the Toronto Varsity Blues.

The game pitted a pair of 1-3 teams against one another. The Lions were coming off a 32-1 loss to Laurier, while the Blues were eyeing a bounce back at home off a 37-7 loss to the Windsor Lancers.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first points of the game came with just over five minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Blues moved the ball about 30 yards downfield, and kicker Sam Henke nailed a 28-yard field goal to put the home side up 3-0.
  • Then, after the Blues got the ball down inside the 10-yard line looking to go up by 10, quartebrack Kinsale Philip was picked off by Matt Dean, snuffing out the Toronto drive.
  • In the second, the Lions caught another break. After a snap went over the head of punter Nathan Walker, he was able to retrieve the ball and kick it away. He was run into by a Toronto cover man, and the Lions got to keep the ball.
  • They were unable to take advantage of the penalty, however, as Walker missed a 31-yard field goal
  • On the ensuing drive, Philip found Mchael Lehmann down the rail for a 34-yard completion. The play was called back by penalty, however, negating the biggest play of the day.
  • Late in the first half, the Lions had their biggest offensive play of the day to that point, as Alfred Olay got the edge and picked up 22 yards.
  • On the very next play, however, Noah Craney attempted to pitch one off to Spencer Cockrill, but the transfer was bobbled and the loose ball was scooped up by James Greig, who returned it 26 yards to the house for six and a 10-0 Toronto lead.
  • They would add a point on a missed field goal rouge, and lead 11-0 at the break.
  • The Lions came out with an electric start in the second half. Speedy return man Olay returned the opening kickoff 99 yards to the U of T 12-yard line.
  • Two plays later, quarterback Noah Craney fooled the entire Varsity Blues defence and could have walked into the end zone for the first Lions score of the afternoon, making it 11-7 in favour of Toronto.
  • The Blues, however, were quick to respond. Luka Stoikos returned the kickoff 46 yards. On the next play from scrimmage, a 19-yard completion to Daniel Diodatti set the Blues up well inside Lions territory.
  • Then, after a penalty backed the Blues up to first and 20, Philip found Lehman for a 30-yard gain down to the York 1-yard line. He snuck it in on  the next play to expand the Blues lead back to 11 at 18-7.
  • On the next Blues drive, they found paydirt once again. Chunk plays through the air to Jarred Currie and Jake Oseen for 11 and 12 yards, respectively, set the Blues up on the York 35. Stoikos then took the next play to the house for Toronto's 3rd major of the day to make it 25-7 U of T.
  • They kept pouring it on on the next possession. After two Stoikos rushes for 31 yards put the Blues in first and goal on the 3, Philip found offensive lineman Mojtaba Mehry for the score to make it 32-7 U of T.
  • Stoikos added another touchdown with just over five minutes remaining, this one from nine yards out, making it 39-7 Toronto to round out the scoring.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions will play their final road game of the season against the Queen's Gaels. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm from Richardson Stadium in Kingston.
