Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

LIONS STRIKE TWICE LATE IN FIRST HALF IN HOME WIN OVER LANCERS

The York University Lions men's soccer team was looking to keep the good times rolling as they welcomed in the Windsor Lancers in the back half of a season-opening home-and-home set, and they accomplished that feat with a 3-0 victory; their second shutout in as many games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • This game started out as a physical affair with several hard challenges early.
  • The Lions also had many high-quality offensive looks in the early going. The problem – the Lions were whistled for four offsides in the opening half hour of play, a couple by Soli Olatoye, as he stretched out the Windsor defence on through-balls but was steps too far.
  • Olatoye had more offensive chances after those earlier offsides, as he was hauled down in the box and sent to the spot. His attempt was denied by Windsor keeper Brandon Gaudreau, but Johnny on the spot for the Lions was Joey Mac. The Marist College transfer slid home his first goal as a Lion in the 38th minute to propel the Lions to a 1-0 lead.
  • Then, just five minutes later, the Lions struck for a second time. It was another first career OUA goal, and this time it was Milo Djuricic finding the back of the net.
  • A free kick was sent into the box and Djuricic headed it home past Gaudreau to double the Lions lead to 2-0, the same position in which they found themselves after 45 minutes in the opening game of the season.
  • Another great Lions' opportunity came off a beautiful through ball to Olatoye, which he raced onto with a nice display of speed. He played the ball into the middle for Jaytin Pabla, whose shot went just over the bar.
  • The Lancers thought they may have cut the Lions lead in half in the 69th minute, but an offside call wiped Windsor's first goal of the season off the board. Then, in the 75th minute, the Lions would ice it, as Mudaser Muhtaj was able to fire a bullet past Gaudreau off a nice setup from Agostino Principato, to make it 3-0 for the home side.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • Mac's marker wasn't only the first goal of his OUA career, it was his first in collegiate athletics after posting four assists in 14 games as a freshman in the NCAA's Division I at Marist.
  • Despite only recording three goals, York's 25 shots almost doubled their total of 14 from their 6-0 rout of the Lancers on Friday, Sept. 2.
LOOKING AHEAD

The Lions now get set to entertain the Waterloo Warriors on Thursday night at 8:00 pm at York Lions Stadium.
