Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

MELINO’S GOAL CARRIES YORK TO VICTORY OVER FORMIDABLE WARRIORS

Two undefeated teams entered Thursday evening's contest at York Lions Stadium, but only the York University Lions men's soccer team emerged with their spotless record in tact. Chris Melino's 52nd minute goal put the Lions up over the Waterloo Warriors, and they ultimately held on for a 2-0 win.

The victory came in front of York's Frosh Rewind crowd of 1,391, the largest of any varsity event so far this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lions attempted to create overloads by pushing the midfielders up the field, with Agostino Principato creating a huge opportunity splitting through ball through the legs of a Warriors defender which was latched onto by Soji Olatoye, but he had his chance stopped by Jakson Vinci from close range.
  • The second half began with a more cautious approach from both sides with the breakthrough coming via a corner scored by substitute Melino, when he redirected the cross into the back of the net to make the score 1-0.
  • Five minutes later Justin Hendricks doubled the lead with a curled effort finding the top right corner assisted by a Principato who had moved into a false-nine position.
  • The pace of the game was slowed in the later portions with a few half chances being the only chances created as the Lions maintained possession to close out the game and maintain a clean sheet.
LOOKING AHEAD

The Lions face the Waterloo Warriors away from home at Warrior Field Sunday, Sept. 11 at 3:15 pm.
