LIONS CONTROL POSSESSION, STIFLE LANCERS ATTACK IN HOME-OPENING VICTORY

Coming off a scoreless draw on Friday in their season opener, the York University Lions women's soccer team took to their home pitch for the first time this season on Sunday. Their opponent? The Windsor Lancers once again, in the second half of a season-opening home-and-home set.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game started out slowly, as both teams looked to feel each other out in the early going. The most notable chance of the opening minutes came off the foot of Kalifornia Mitchell.
  • Mitchell, appearing in her 50th OUA game, lined up for a free kick and struck one right on goal from 35 yards out, but it was turned aside by veteran Lancer keeper Lauren Gellner.
  • About 10 minutes later, the Lions struck for their first goal of the game and season. Erica Di Matteo finished off a nice passing play from the Lions, as she one-touched in a ball into the middle for a 1-0 Lions lead in the 20th minute.
  • Despite the Lions only maintaining a one-goal lead after the opening 45 minutes, they carried play through much of the first half, with the Lancers generating only one quality scoring chance in the first half.
  • In the second half, the Lions continued to dominate possession time. Mitchell and first-year Nia Flemming both had quality looks early in the second 45, but neither shot was able to find the target.
  • The best chance of the day aside from Di Matteo's goal came in the 73rd minute. Alexandra Quaidoo looked like she had doubled the York lead, but blasted one off the bar.
  • After the near miss, the Lions continued to suffocate Windsor's attack in them midfield while pressing offensively when the opportunity was afforded.
  • The Lancers generated very little push in the final minutes while looking for the equalizer, and the Lions held on for their second consecutive clean sheet over Windsor, and earn their first win of 2022 by a score of 1-0.
LOOKING AHEAD
