Kalifornia Mitchell's late first-half tally broke the ice for the York University Lions women's soccer team and they never looked back. They received two more goals in the second half to seal their second win of the 2022 campaign, 3-0 over the Waterloo Warriors.
Â
The win came in front of a boisterous weeknight crowd of 1,391 at York Lions Stadium, as Frosh-goers packed the stands making a memorable night for the home side.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game started quickly with the Lions dominating the early minutes, winning a corner in the first minute of the half with Nia Fleming-Thompson putting the ball just wide after a cross by Giuliana Paolella.
- York enjoyed the lion's share of chances in the game's opening half, the majority of which being snuffed out by Warriors goalkeeper Hannah Petrosino. She made several big saves during the first half including two saves off Kalifornia Mitchell chances.
- Mitchell would get an opportunity over the line in the 48th minute, breaking the scoreless tie. She looped a shot off the fingertips of Petrosino and into the open net, earning her first goal of 2022 in the process.
- York notched their second of the game in the 66th minute, with Flemming finishing after Jotam Chouhan pressured the Warriors backline causing a turnover. It was then passed to the rookie for her first career OUA goal, and it was 2-0.Â
- The last ten minutes of the game continued with a push for the Lions, and they earned their third goal of the game. Alexandra Quadioo scored in the 87th minute off a rebound.Â
