In a game which, in many ways, mirrored their last contest against the TMU Bold, the York University Lions women's basketball team once again fell by the slimmest of margins, this time to the Nipissing Lakers, 72-71, in an action-packed affair Friday evening at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After the game was tied at 6-6, the Lions raced out to an 8-1 run to make it 14-7 in the first five minutes of the opening quarter. Jada Codrington and Lauren Golding both made back-to-back threes to grab a Lions 26-16 advantage at the end of the first.
- The visitors responded in the second, putting together an early 8-2 run of their own to trim it to a four-point game with 6:22 left in the quarter. The rest of the quarter saw a back-and-forth engagement between the squads, with the Lions holding on to a five-point advantage by halftime.
- The Lakers continued their stride into the third frame, opening the quarter on a 12-3 run, grabbing a 47-43 lead at 4:57 to force a Lions timeout. From there, the Lakers went on to outshoot the Lions 26-9, cushioning a 61-49 edge at the end of the third.
- The Lions clawed back into the game with a strong fourth quarter,They started the frame on a 17-4 run, grabbing a 66-65 lead with 3:45 remaining in the game.
- The lead changed hands multiple times over the final three minutes, and with the Lions down 72-71, they had a chance to win it with Lauren Golding, but her runner rimmed out and went back to the Lakers off a Lion. York got a steal on the in-bound, but the three-quarter-court heave came up short, handing the Lions their second consecutive one-point loss
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
"We definitely had a great first and fourth quarter, but we let them take the momentum from us in the second and third and dug ourselves a hole too deep in the third to come up in the fourth. We still have time, a lot more games to play and still in the running of playoffs, just need to lock in and get some key wins." — head coach Christa Eniojukan
LOOKING AHEAD
The Lions are right back in action tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 14 where they face another East Division opponent in the Laurentian Voyageurs at the Tait McKenzie Centre. Tip-off is scheduled for 6pm.
