After two consecutive one-point game losses, the York University Lions women's basketball team returned to home court with a befitting response, as they dished the Laurentian Voyageurs a 70-43 loss Saturday evening at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
With the victory the Lions improve their record to 5-7, standing fourth in the Central division.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams went neck-and-neck in the opening quarter, with the Voyageurs grabbing on to a 7-3 lead at 6:27, the Lions quickly responded with a Lauren Golding jump shot, followed by a Kiara Leveridge steal leading to a three-pointer by Avery Bathe-Minard on the other end, grabbing their first 8-7 lead of the game at 5:59. After the first 10 minutes of action, the visitors lead 19-15.
- The Lions flip the script in the second, as they took charge outshooting the Voyageurs 19-9 with Golding and Maya Abouzeid combining for 12 of the team's 19 points in the quarter
- With the Lions up six, they bolstered that advantage to 18 points after firing off to a 19-7 run in the third quarter with Cyanna King leading the way with a 13-point quarter performance.
- The red and whites continued their dominance into the final frame, outscoring the Voyageurs 17-12. Jaz Balan, the first-year forward put an exclamation mark on the scoresheet for York with her first career OUA basket en route to a dominating 70-47 victory.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Lions will remain home, as they will play their annual school day game on Friday, Jan. 20 against the Laurier Golden Hawks at the Tait McKenzie Centre. The tip-off is slated for 11am.
