The York University Lions women's hockey team travelled to Oshawa to do battle with the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on Saturday night. They were looking to build off an emotional 4-3 overtime win over the TMU Bold on Thursday, their first victory since late November.
Despite heavily outshooting the Ridgebacks by a count of 41-24, the Lions ran into a hot goaltender in the name of Zoe McGee, who stopped all 41 shots she faced in a 4-0 win. McGee also shut out the Lions on a Saturday night in Oshawa back on November 26.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Lions sent all kinds of rubber McGee's direction in the first period, outshooting the Ridgebacks 23-5. However, it was the Ridgebacks who opened the scoring midway through the opening period on a power play. Kayla Welk put one past Julianna Thomson to take advantage of a Sydney Hiltz holding call and make it 1-0 Ontario Tech.
- Then, in the second Welk potted her second of the night just 2:27 into the period, this one at even strength, to extend the lead to 2-0.
- Nine minutes later, the hosts put the game out of reach with another power play goal, here courtesy of Nicole Escano, to make it 3-0 Ridgebacks.
- In the final frame, Ontario Tech did a solid job of protecting the lead, only allowing 10 shots on goal. With the goaltender out and just over 2:30 remaining, Cassandra Davies put home an empty netter to seal a 4-0 Ridgebacks win.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will now have eight days off before playing the second game of a three-game road trip in Windsor next Sunday, Jan. 22 at 7:00 pm. They then wrap up the trip the following night against Western at 5:30 pm.
