Sydney Paulson, Lola Massey and Taylor Coward each registered a tally for the York University Lions women's hockey team to lift the squad to a 3-1 win against the Windsor Lancers Sunday night at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After the Lions took an early penalty, Taylor Leitch was left wide open in front following some good work along the boards by Windsor. She took a pass from Maggie Peterson and made no mistake to put the Lancers on the board first. Windsor maintained that 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
- At 9:27 of the second, with the Lions on a 5-on-3 power play, Paulson took, broke in on a 2-on-1 with Coward. Coward found her driving the net, and she settled down a bouncing pick before chipping it over Cadence Petitclerc to tie the game and tie her for the club lead in goals with five. The score remained 1-1 after two.
- 1:54 into the 3rd, Massey beautifully redirected home a Sara McLennan feed on a play that started with a Lancer turnover at centre. Her 3rd of the campaign gave the Lions a 2-1 advantage.
- York locked it down the rest of the way defensively, and with 28 seconds left in game, Coward potted her first goal of the season with an empty netter to cap off a 3-1 victory, their sixth win of the year and second in the last three games.
- Emma Wedgewood was solid in goal for the Lions, stopping 27 of the 28 shots she faced, and was perfect for the final 57:29 of the hockey game.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions are right back in action tomorrow against the Western Mustangs where they will take a shot at avenging their 1-0 loss from their last matchup on October 28, 2022. The puck drop is slated for 5pm at the Thompson Arena in London.
