After a pair of one-point losses since the dawn of the new year, the York University Lions women's basketball team finally saw its fate flip on Friday afternoon. They defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks in the first school day game since 2020. With an energetic and enthusiastic young crowd behind them York pulled out 83-81 in an intense game full of clutch three-pointers, some solid defending and, yes, a little bit of luck.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Laurier went ahead in the first quarter, with York struggling to get into the paint and settled for several three-pointers. The Lions were behind by as many as 10 in the first but managed to cut the lead to seven by the end of the quarter thanks to Cyanna King keeping her team in it with seven points.
- York found its game midway through the second with Lauren Golding making a world of difference for her team on both ends of the floor. Maya Abouzied also had a pair of threes for the home side. The Lions limited Laurier to 15 second-quarter points and trimmed the Hawks lead to one, 42-41, at the break.
- The Lions roared out of the gate in the third, starting the second half on a 12-0 run, with nine of the points scored by Golding and King. The Golden Hawks then responded with a 20-7 run to end the quarter, and we entered the final frame all knotted at 62.
- With the score tied 81-81 in the final seconds of the fourth some great hustle by the Lions led to a steal from Jada Codrington. Back the other way, Kiara Leveridge was fouled under the basket, and made one of two free throws to put York up 82-81.
- Laurier advanced the ball on a timeout and they got the ball into the hands of Miranda Campbell. She drove to the basket with a right-handed layup that was half-way down, but lipped out. The Lions got the board and King was fouled. She, too, made one of two from the stripe, but it was enough as the last-second heave from Laurier was well short. The Lions finally won a close one, 83-81 over the Hawks.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
King led the game in scoring with 26 and Golding led in rebounds with 15, With the most 3-pointers coming from Abouzeid with 5.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will try to extend their win streak to three when they head to St. Catharines to battle the Brock Badgers tomorrow at 6:00pm.
