MUSTANGS BLANK LIONS IN RARE MONDAY MATCH-UP

The two early second-period goals in the span of 3:13 propelled the Western Mustangs  to a 2-0 victory over the York University Lions women's hockey team Monday evening at the Thompson Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lions charged onto the ice and put the Mustangs' defence to work early in the first period. However, the second half of the opening period started to unravel for the Lions, as a result of their four penalties, including a 5-on-3 disadvantage late in the period.
  • Despite being outnumbered in the dying minutes of the period, the Lions were able to block every shot that was sent at them, keeping it a scoreless contest after 20 minutes of action.
  • Coming reenergized from the first intermission, the Mustangs took charge as Emma Campbell wasted no time in the second frame to erase the scoreless drought in the first 40 seconds off a Selena Dirven feed, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
  • Shortly after, Western struck once again with their second tally of the game from Avry Pedersen with a feed from the neutral zone to catch Emma Wedgewood off guard at 3:24.
  • With the Mustangs holding onto a 2-0 lead heading into the closing period, the team locked in on their defence and outshot the Lions 11-4, holding off the visitors scoreless in the match.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Lions will return to home ice on Saturday, Jan 28 where they will host the Guelph Gryphons for their first face-off of the 2022-23 campaign. The puck-drop is slated for 7:15 pm at the Canlan Ice Sports.
