A first-period Katherine Heard goal was all the Guelph Gryphons needed to put away the York University Lions women's hockey team 1-0 Saturday night at Canlan Sports.
Â
Kathryn Raymond stood tall in between the pipes for the Gryphons stopping every shot fired at her, holding the Lions scoreless after 60 minutes of play.  Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Heard got the action underway on a wide-open look at the net to snipe a one-timer past Emma Wedgewood at 12:21. Despite being outshot 14-8 in the period, Wedgewood kept the Lions in the game making key saves, keeping it a 1-0 contest at the end of the first.
- After another 20 minutes of action, the second period patterned the first with both teams having their chances, this time with the Lions taking the upper hand with 7-6 shots. However, neither was able to break through, and the score remained 1-0 in favour of Guelph at the end of the period.Â
- Despite a valiant final-period effort, and outshooting the Gryphons 9-6, the Lions were unable to find the back of Raymond's net.
