LIONS SHUT OUT BY GRYPHONS TO CLOSE OUT JANUARY

A first-period Katherine Heard goal was all the Guelph Gryphons needed to put away the York University Lions women's hockey team 1-0 Saturday night at Canlan Sports.

Kathryn Raymond stood tall in between the pipes for the Gryphons stopping every shot fired at her, holding the Lions scoreless after 60 minutes of play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Heard got the action underway on a wide-open look at the net to snipe a one-timer past Emma Wedgewood at 12:21. Despite being outshot 14-8 in the period, Wedgewood kept the Lions in the game making key saves, keeping it a 1-0 contest at the end of the first.
  • After another 20 minutes of action, the second period patterned the first with both teams having their chances, this time with the Lions taking the upper hand with 7-6 shots. However, neither was able to break through, and the score remained 1-0 in favour of Guelph at the end of the period.
  • Despite a valiant final-period effort, and outshooting the Gryphons 9-6, the Lions were unable to find the back of Raymond's net.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Lions will look to bounce back when they head over to Kingston, Ont. to take on the Queen's Gaels for a home-and-home series. The first of the back-to-back contest is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 3 at 7:30pm.
