Box Score With the York University Lions women's hockey team looking to make a run in the final stretch of the regular season, the team came up short 5-3 against the Queen's Gaels Friday night at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Gaels found their way around the Lions territory first, as Carys Collie took advantage of a deflected shot off Emma Wedgewood's stick, converting it to a 1-0 lead at 6:40.
- With just under a minute, Alexa Giantsopoulos rifled a response, as she rebounded Ilena Ricker-Singh's shot, netting their first goal of the season against the Gaels.
- Shortly after, Brooke Anderson fired a seeing-eye shot at 9:20 to catch Lexi Giorgi off guard, preserving a 2-1 advantage at the end of the first period.
- The second period played out in the Gaels favour, as they potted three unanswered goals. Alyson Reeves got the scoring spree underway, tipping in a back-handed shot off a power play at 7:03.
- With 5:42 remaining on the clock, the Gaels found themselves on a 5-on-3 advantage of which Sophie Hudson capitalized off of, burying a one-timer for a 3-1 edge at 14:40.
- With less than two minutes in the period, Scout Watkins-Southward single-handedly beat the two Lions jerseys, doubling the lead to 4-2 at the end of the frame.
- After Queen's padded their lead, Sasha Brucker made one last push for the Lions, after benefitting off a Queen's puck overturn to score one of her own, trimming the deficit to 5-3. Despite the effort, the Lions were unable to recover and fell short 5-3.
