LIONS LOSS TO TMU COMES DOWN TO FINAL POSSESSION

After a nail-biter at Mattamy Athletic Centre, it all came down to a dramatic fourth quarter in which the York University Lions women's basketball team was unable to overcome the TMU Bold as they went on to edge out a one-point 71-70 victory Saturday afternoon at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

Despite Lauren Golding's game-high 21-point effort, the Lions fell shy of just one point, dropping their record 4-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bold attacked first as they went on a 12-3 run in the first four minutes, forcing an early Lions timeout.
  • After regrouping and making adjustments, the Lions returned with a hot hand and swarming defence, holding off the Bold scoreless for four minutes while the Lions responded with a 9-0 run of their own to tie the game at 12-12. The rest of the quarter saw a back-and-forth affair with Ashanti Christian pulling up a buzzer-beater to cut the Bold's lead to 19-16 after 10 minutes of action.
  • Both teams exchanged baskets to keep the game within reach for the majority of the second quarter, but TMU took over in the final two minutes, as they rushed for another 10-2 run to end the quarter with Haley Fedick capping off the quarter with a three-point buzzer-beater to extend the Bolds lead to 43-32 at halftime.
  • The Lions returned to the court with extreme heat as they fired off to an 11-0 run cutting the deficit to 43-45 in the first four minutes of the third quarter. The Bold, however, continued to lead the rest of the quarter with Tiya Misir firing two back-to-back threes to put the Bold up eight.
  • The fourth was a tale of a tense back-and-forth quarter, as the Bold were looking to secure their lead while to Lions were in search of their first lead of the game. After blowing up for a 17-6 run and a 1:30 left on the shot clock, Jada Codrington grabbed the team's first lead of the contest, as she connected from beyond the arc to put the Lions up 66-65.
  • With the Bold down three, Rachel Farwell responded with a three-point jump shot, tying the game at 68-68 with 51 seconds left on the clock. The Lions then fouled TMU twice to gain possession of the ball, off of which Bold gained a 71-68 advantage.
  • In the dying seconds of the contest, Codrington responded with a quick layup to trim the deficit to 71-70, however, was not enough to setback the Bold to their one-point victory.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Lions will now return home for their first 2023 home games as they will host the Nipissing Lakers on Friday, Jan. 13 at the Tait McKenzie Centre. The tip-off is scheduled for 6pm.
