LIONS TRIUMPH OVER MARTLETS IN DOUBLE-HEADER

York University Lions field hockey team triumphed in both matches of their back-to-back doubleheader against the McGill Martlets on Sunday at Alumni Field. The day underscored the Lions remarkable defensive powers, resulting in two shutout victories. Courtesy of the two wins, the Lions maintain their top seed of the OUA East standings, sitting with a 6-0 record.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Game 1:

  • The Lions found their way on the scoresheet first, courtesy of Lexi Hannah, who netted a penalty goal at 9:23, to put the Lions in charge 1-0, a lead they maintained until the end of the quarter.
  • At the beginning of the second quarter, York resumed their offensive efforts creating multiple opportunities at the net. It wasn't until the 20th-minute mark, when Hannah, once again, found an opening past Anoushka Oke to make it a 2-0 contest heading into halftime.
  • The Lions would further solidify their lead in the third quarter, as Hannah lifted the ball into the back of the net, capitalizing off a pinpoint feed from Natalie Winter. This not only secured a crucial goal for the Lions but also marked her first hat-trick of the season at the 39:05 mark, giving York a 3-0 edge over the visitors.
  • The Lions would add two more penalty goals in the fourth quarter, both tallied by Abby Thompson, who would eventually net one more, adding another hat-trick to the game for York.
  • The Lions solidified a resounding 6-0 victory over the Martlets, who struggled to produce any shots in response to York's 18.

Game 2:

  • In the second match of the day, York took an early lead in scoring. Lexi Hannah seamlessly continued her impressive performance, capitalizing on an opportunity as she found the Martlets' net-minder, Anoushka Oke, out of position.
  • With just three minutes remaining in the opening quarter, York's Elyse Ives left her mark in the game, as she netted her fifth goal of the season, stretching the lead to 2-0.
  • Not long after, Mehtaab Sandhu and Hannah once again followed the cue, adding two more assurance goals at 24:10 and 29:01 to take a 4-0 edge at halftime.
  • The final two quarters commenced in a similar fashion, with McGill conceding yet another penalty corner that was converted into a goal by Abby Thompson, to secure their second shutout of the day 5-0.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions will look to remain undefeated, as they get set to take on their cross-town rivals, the Toronto Varsity Blues, in a home-and-home series kicking off on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at Alumni Field. The second leg follows shortly on Saturday, Oct. 7. The first game is slated for 7:00 pm.
