In a highly-anticipated showdown between the OUA's two top teams and two of the three top-ranked team in the country, the Toronto Varsity Blues, and the third-ranked York University Lions field hockey team, the Lions remained undefeated, moving to 7-0 with a 3-1 victory over Toronto at Alumni Field on Wednesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The game commenced with both teams exhibiting tenacity and energy. The first quarter's decisive moment occurred at the 4:30 mark when York's Lexi Hannah scored the opening goal, assisted by Emily Esser, marking her seventh of the season.
- The Varsity Blues found the scoreboard just three minutes into the second quarter as Rebecca Carvalho responded with a goal that was assisted by Maggie Mullins, levelling the score at 1-1.
- Undeterred, York reclaimed the lead with a goal from Elise Piper. At 25:49, Piper sent a shot past Deepi Gill, making it a 2-1 contest in favour of York.
- Jade Lew was instrumental in keeping the Lions in the game, making some key saves into the final quarter. The final goal of the game was orchestrated by her sister, Jewel Lew, during a penalty corner which secured the decisive 3-1 victory for York, improving their season record to 7-0.
LOOKING AHEAD:
With three games remaining in the season, the Lions will continue to maintain their stride, as they head over to visit their cross-town rivals for the second leg of their home-and-home series with Toronto on Saturday, Oct 7. They will look to secure a series sweep against the No.1-ranked Varsity Blues. The game is scheduled for 1:00pm at the Back Campus Fields.
