Coming off their first loss of the season, the No. 3 nationally-ranked York University Lions women's field hockey team re-discovered their winning ways on Saturday afternoon in Kingston as they met the Queen's Gaels in the front half of a campaign-capping home and home series.
Three first-half goals, including two second-period goals from Elyse Ives, propelled the Lions to a 3-1 victory. This win marks their eighth of the season, solidifying York's position at the top of the OUA East Division with an 8-1 record.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Lions drew first blood in the 7th minute when Lexi Hannah netted her OUA-leading ninth of the season to make it 1-0 Lions
- The Gaels, however, were quick to respond, levelling the score at 1-1, as Tasha Stanford found the back of the net in the 10th minute.
- The Lions seized control of the match as, In the 21st minute, Ives beat Queen's keeper Jennie Izatt to secure a 2-1 York lead.
- And Ives wasn't done yet. With just two minutes left in the second quarter, she scored her second goal of the contest in the 28th minute to re-tie Hannah for the OUA with her ninth of the season.
- A scoreless second half capped off a 3-1 Lions win, and gets them back in the left-hand column after last Saturday's setback at Toronto,
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will re-engage with the Gaels for their second leg of the home-and-home series and their final regular season game on Sunday, Oct. 15 at the Alumni Field. A win or a tie tomorrow secures top spot in the OUA and home-field advantage in a potential OUA championship game. Game time is slated for 1:00 pm.
