The spotlight was on the York Lions women's hockey team on Friday evening as they traveled to Windsor for an exciting matchup against the Windsor Lancers. The highly-anticipated season opening game promised a clash of skills and determination as the Lions were eager to make their mark on the 2023-24 women's hockey campaign.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Lions opened the game strong, with Kaitlin Teixeira making her mark six minutes in, successfully netting her first collegiate goal and the first point of the year for the York Lions.
- The Lancers evened the scoreline 1-1 leading into the first intermission, and came out quickly in the second to take a 2-1 lead.
- York showcased an impressive defensive performance, lead by goaltender Emma Wedgewood, who had made 10 exceptional saves against the Lancers throughout the first two periods.
- With tension rising for York in the second period, and trailing by a goal, Julia Cuccia successfully scored, levelling the score for her team to 2-2 to end the second period.
- Despite the relentless offensive efforts, York fell short; ultimately, the Windsor Lancers secured the victory with a score of 3-2.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The journey continues for the Lions as they remain on the road for opening weekend. On Saturday, they will travel to London to face the Western Mustangs with puck drop slatted at 4:00 p.m.
