The York University Lions women's hockey team hosted the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks at Canlan Ice Sports on Friday night, seeking redemption after their tough 4-0 loss to the Guelph Gryphons last Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Lions took a late lead in the first period with just over 3:00 to play. goal by Julia Cuccia, She took a stretch pass at centre and used her speed to get in behind the defence, sliding a backhand through the legs of Ridgebacks goaltender Zoe McGee to make it 1-0 Lions.
- The second period unfolded in a contrasting manner to the first, as York's Alexa Giantsopoulos was left open in the slot and wristed a shot past McGee to double the lead. Cuccia then buried a rebound in front off a Sara McLennan shot for her second of the night to make it 3-0 after 40.
- The Lions added one more in the third courtesy of Natalie Mamone, who was spotted alone in the left circle by Julianna Duma off a Ridgebacks giveaway. That capped the scoring in what was a 4-0 Lions win
- In what was their most complete effort of the season, the Lions were led by Cuccia's two tallies, while Emma Wedgewood made 23 saves for her first shutout of the season and second of her career.
