After what was their best effort of the season Friday night in a 4-0 shutout win over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks, the York University Lions women's hockey team looked to follow it up against another division foe in the Brock Badgers.
The Lions put forth another solid effort, this one on the road on the second night of a back-to-back, but unfortunately weren't rewarded for said effort, as they fell 3-1 to the host Badgers.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The shots in the opening period favoured Brock, 7-6, in what was an evenly-matched frame. One of those six York shots was a penalty shot for Alexa Giantsopoulos, who was looking for her second goal in as many nights, just over five minutes in. She was stopped, however by Brock goaltender Kenzie Harmison, keeping the game scoreless.
- The Badgers were first to find the scoresheet with less than three minutes to go in the period. Madeline Nicholson beat Emma Wedgewood, who was making another start after her 23-save shutout on Friday, for her first of the season to make it 1-0 Badgers.
- The Lions knotted it up in the middle frame courtesy their hottest player. After a pair of goals in Friday's win, Julia Cuccia scored her third goal in the last 24 hours – and fourth of the year – to tie the game at one after two.
- Brock's Madison Conkwright put her team back on top just under six minutes into the third period, making it 3-2.
- Despite outshooting Brock 11-6 in the final 20 minutes, the Lions were unable to find an equalizer, and Allison Stevenson iced it with 35 seconds to go into an empty net to solidify a 3-1 Brock victory.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions gear up for the second game of their five-game road trip when they head to Waterloo to face both the Laurier Golden Hawks. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
