LIONS SETTLE FOR SPLIT OF TWO-GAME WEEKEND SET WITH LAKEHEAD

The York University men's basketball team was in search of a two-game series sweep against the Lakehead Thunderwolves, however, the Thunderwolves were resolute in securing a series split, achieving just that with an 87-72 triumph over the Lions on Saturday night at the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse in Thunder Bay, Ont.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Thunderwolves took an early lead in the first quarter, initiating a 17-7 run with 4:05 left in the opening quarter. Lakehead maintained their momentum, propelled by an eight-point contribution from Tyler Sagl, preserving a 10-point lead after 10 minutes of action.
  • The second quarter witnessed a dominant performance from the Lions, igniting a red-hot streak that outshone the Thunderwolves 22-12. Spearheaded by Evan Shadkami and Nickele Harris, combining for 14 points. The Lions, despite facing a 26-11 deficit early in the quarter, accelerated with a remarkable 22-6 run, propelling them to a 33-32 lead at halftime.
  • With another tight, back-and-forth engagement, the Lions found themselves down 47-39 with just 2:34 remaining in the quarter, however, the Lions regrouped and fired off to an impressive 18-5 run, concluding the quarter with a slim one-point margin in favour of Lakehead.
  • The fourth quarter displayed a change of fate for the Lions, as the Thunderwolves wasted no time and embarked on a 16-4 run to start the final quarter. From thereon, the early surge set the stage for the rest of the quarter, with Lakehead maintaining their dominance by outscoring the visitors 35-21 in the closing 10 minutes, ultimately sealing an 87-72 victory.
