Second-half struggles were once again the undoing of the York University Lions women's basketball team on Saturday night at the Tait McKenzie Centre, this time against the Windsor Lancers.
The Lancers outscored the Lions 11-1 in the third quarter and 25-12 in the second half en route to a 55-44 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Lancers got out to a 6-1 lead in the early minutes of the contest. However, the Lions were solid offensively in their own right, with Tianna Bailey and Gabby Di Pietro each hitting from beyond the arc in the quarter. Windsor led by one after one, 15-14.
- The beginning of the second quarter echoed the dynamics of the first, with both teams exchanging baskets, leading to 11 lead changes in the first half. Courtesy of Kiara Leveridge's eight second-quarter points, the Lions held a 32-30 advantage over the visitors at halftime.
- In the third quarter, the pendulum swung in favour of the Lancers, as they were smothering on defence, holding York to just a single point in the quarter from a Leveridge free throw. Windsor owned a 41-33 advantage at the end of the quarter.
- The Lions snapped their 10-minute scoring drought on a Bilan Khadar jump shot at the 8:56 mark of the fourth, trimming the deficit to 41-35. However, the visitors then embarking on a 7-3 run and took a 10-point lead with 4:51 left on the clock. The Lions continued to struggle offensively, putting up just 11 fourth-quarter points, and fell 55-44.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will remain home in an effort to secure their first win of the season, as they host the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday, Nov. 24 in a home-and-home series, kicking off at 11:00 am on School Day yat the Tait McKenzie Centre.
