The York University Lions women's hockey team entered their second matchup of the season with the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks – the finale of a four-game road trip – looking for a third straight win, and fourth in the last five games. However, the Ridgebacks were looking to atone fortheir previous 4-0 loss to York on Nov. 10. The Ridgebacks indeed managed to turn the tables, securing a 2-1 victory over the Lions Thursday night in Oshawa.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the opening period, both teams were solid defensively, The Lions managed a slight advantage on the shot clock, outshooting the Ridgebacks 9-5 in what was a scoreless opening period. Â
- Nicole York wasted little time in the second, however, as she scored her first career OUA goal a mere 54 seconds into the second stanza to give the Lions a 1-0 lead on the milestone marker.Â
- Just under seven minutes later, Ontario Tech's Harrie Jones went coast-to-coast on a power play, roofing an equalizer past Emma Wedgewood to tie the game one apiece 7:51 into the second. The score remained deadlocked 1-1 through 40.
- In the third period, it was the Ridgebacks' turn to strike early. Kayla Welk re-directed a Katie Mikkelsen centring pass by Wedgewood 1:18 into the final frame, giving the hosts a 2-1 advantage.Â
- Despite York outshooting Ontario 17-8 in the third, Zoe McGee stopped all of them and solidified a bounce-back win for Ontario Tech over the Lions.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will look to roar back into the win column on Saturday, Nov. 25 as they return home to host the TMU Bold at the Canlan Ice Sports. The puck-drop is slated for 7:15 pm.
