The York University Lions men's basketball team began their season at home on Friday evening against the Waterloo Warriors. The Lions strong offensive performance lead them to a 69-52 victory over the Warriors.
Evan Shadkami led the Lions with 19 points going 8-16 from field goal range, while
Liam Rietschin slammed a couple of baskets shooting 100% from the free throw line and tallying 16 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In a highly anticipated opening match the Lions and Warriors battled back-and-forth all game keeping the scoreline close.
- York's Liam Rietschin led the quarter with six points, going 4-4 from the free throw line and adding a buzzer beater, heading into the second quarter down by three, 11-14.
- The game remained tight in the second quarter with both teams falling short on prime opportunities, but the Lions never let the Warriors out of side finishing the first half all tied up 24-24.
- The Lions took off in the third quarter as Rietschin and Evan Shadkami led the way for the offense while Nickele Harris and Jahlijah Grant played lock down defense. York put on a show taking the third quarter 44-38.
- The final quarter of action saw the Lions flourish, showcasing their best talent and ball movement. The Warriors were left stunned as the Lions finished the game with a 69-52 win.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will take on the Brock Badgers in St. Catherines on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 8:00pm. The first road contest for the Lions looking to take their winning spirit on the road.
