With the York University Lions women's hockey team in search of their first victory of the 2023-24 campaign, the team managed to do just that. They stunned the Waterloo Warriors 2-1 on Friday night at the Canlan Ice Sports.
With the win, the Lions improved their season record to 1-4, putting them in a third-place tie with the Queen's Gaels and TMU Bold in the OUA East Division.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- An initially slow start for the Lions, conceding an early two-man advantage to the visitors, the team was quick to flip the script. It was Kaitlin Teixeira who broke the ice for York, as she capitalized on a rebound, slipping the puck past the Warriors netminder, Mikayla Schnarr to take a 1-0 advantage 6:38 into the opening period.
- A mere four minutes after Teixeira's opening goal, Sara McLennan wasted no time in doubling the Lions lead, as she snuck one past Schnarr.
- Despite facing several shots on goal, Emma Wedgewood stood tall between the pipes, thwarting every shot fired her way. As a result, the Lions maintained their 2-0 lead as the first period drew to a close.
- The second period went in favour of the visitors, with Waterloo outshooting the Lions 6-2. Jessie Fennell found the back of the net off a one-timer to put the Warriors on the board 2-1 halfway through the period.
- With a tight back-and-forth closing period, and the Warriors outshooting the Lions 7-3, Wedgewood and the Lions maintained their momentum to hold onto their one-point advantage till the final buzzer. The Lions secured their first win since Feb. 18, 2023.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will continue their winning ways when they hit the road to take on the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday, Nov. 4 in Guelph. The puck drop is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
