It was a tough test for the York University Lions women's hockey team in their penultimate game of the fall term, as they welcomed the No. 6-ranked Guelph Gryphons to Canlan Ice Sports on Friday night.
Despite being up a pair in the first period, a three-goal second period paved the way for a 4-3 Guelph victory, as the visitors improved their record to 11-3, while the Lions sit with a 4-9 record.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Lions got in on the forecheck early, as Sasha Brucker forced a turnover behind the Guelph goal. She centred for Julianna Duma, who made no mistake, scoring her first of the season. That got the Lions rolling just 1:08 in.
- Then, it was Sasha Bruker deflecting home an Ava Ricker-Singh point shot for her first of the campaign, doubling the Lions lead 4:03 remaining in the period. Emma Wedgewood played a crucial role between the pipes holding off the Gryphons scoreless after 20 minutes of action.
- In the second period, the visitors hit their stride when Vanessa Bueti capitalized on an opportunity, finding herself alone in front of the net. She slid the puck past Wedgewood at 12:33, trimming the deficit to 2-1.
- A mere 30 seconds later, Maeve Sutherland-Case levelled the score, converting a pass from Reese Coffey right in front of the net and catching
- Then, after some good work by Guelph in the offensive zone on the power play, the puck was played over to Rylee Davison on the near side. Her shot was stopped, but leaked through Wedgewood, and Tori Verbeek was there to put home the rebound, giving Guelph a 3-2 lead with 7:35 to go in the second.
- However, In the last seconds of the frame, the Lions found the equlaizer when Sydney Hiltz pounced on a rebound from a Jillian Milligan shot as the buzzer sounded to tie the game 3-3 after 40.
- The score remained deadlocked until just under 5:00 to play when Jaime Magoffin of the Gryphons got position on Duma and put the winner past Wedgewood, securing the 4-3 Gryphon win, their 11th of the season.

The Lions are set to resume action tomorrow as they welcome the Western Mustangs tomorrow, Saturday, Dec 2 in their last game of the 2023. Puck-drop is slated for 7:15 at Canlan Ice Sports.
