DIMANOCHIE TIES PROGRAM RECORD WITH 21 REBOUNDS IN YORK'S SEASON-FINALE WIN OVER ALGOMA

Somto Dimanochie wrote his name into York University Lions men's basketball history books in his final game in a Lions jersey, propelling the Lions to a 78-65 victory against the Algoma Thunderbirds Sunday evening in the 2022-23 OUA campaign finale at the George Leach Centre.

An emotional night for Dimanochie turned into one that he will never forget, owing to his exceptional statistical performance. His 21 rebounds tied a Lions program record for single-game rebounds. He also posted a team-high 32 points.

Dimanochie now shares the top of the list with Lions alumnus Nick Tufegdzich, who achieved the feat on Nov. 8, 2013.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lions kicked off the opening quarter with a promising start, putting together a opened up a 15-point first-quarter lead backed by a nine-point effort from Dimanochie. With three minutes remaining in the quarter, the Thunderbirds rallied at the end of the quarter, cutting the deficit to 23-16.
  • The Lions mirrored their first-quarter performance, producing another 22-point quarter. With the Thunderbirds cutting it to 23-21 in the opening two minutes of the second frame, Prince Kamunga picked up his game scoring half of the team's points in the second. A buzzer-beating three-pointer by Jacobi Walters ended the quarter with the Lions leading 45-35 going into halftime.
  • Much like the first two quarters, both teams came in batting and exchanging baskets to keep the game tight. Despite this, the Lions were able to maintain control of the game for a substantial portion of the third as they preserved a margin of 63-51.
  • An early 7-0 run by the Thunderbirds put them back in the game, trimming it to a 63-58 contest with seven minutes remaining in the quarter. It was Dimanochie who once again put on a show in the final frame, posting 11 of the teams 15 points, propelling the Lions to a 78-65 victory.
