York University Lions women's hockey player
Brooke Anderson and men's volleyball player
Luke de Greeff were named York female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Feb. 5.
Â
Anderson, Lions captain and fifth-year forward from Winnipeg, Man., has been a leader on her team since the preseason, and she showcased that with stellar play over the weekend's back-to-back games against the Queen's Gaels.
Â
She had three goals over two games Friday and Saturday, with two of them coming on home ice. She opened the scoring at 7:56 of the game's first period, then scored again to put the Lions up 3-0 at 5:22 of the second. Queen's would mount a comeback, but fell one goal short – meaning Anderson's third goal of the weekend stood as the game-winner.
Â
De Greeff, a third-year student from Victoria, B.C., had a team lead of points in both Lions victories this weekend over Trent and Guelph respectively. The psychology major had 12.5 points against the Excalibur Friday, then doubled the rest of his teammates with 14 points against Guelph Saturday.
Â
The Lions men's volleyball team has now won four straight games. This comes at a time when they're looking to lock down home court advantage in the playoffs – a scenario which may require victories in their final three games of the regular season, when they play the No. 2 nationally-ranked McMaster Marauders, and the Windsor Lancers.
