The York University Lions men's soccer team sought to extend their unbeaten streak to five as they made their way to Sault Ste. Marie, to face the Algoma Thunderbirds on Saturday afternoon. That mission proved to be successful, as they shutout the Thunderbirds 2-0, improving to 3-0-2 on the year.
Christian Zeppieri took the spotlight, registering both goals of the match and cementing his exceptional performance.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The early portion of the match saw a feeling out process of sorts for both sides. That changed when Zeppieri converted a penalty kick in the 11th minute, putting York up 1-0.
- The second half played out in a similar fashion. However, not long after Algoma's Daniel Sandoval was shown a second yellow, forcing the Thunderbirds to play with ten men, the Lions capitalized. It was Zeppieri once again who beat Algoma keeper Josh Bondoc for his third of the season. That expanded York's lead to 2-0, an advantage they would carry to the final whistle.
- The Lions smothered the Thunderbirds in the midfield all afternoon, allowing only one shot directed at goal in the match, while firing seven the way of Bondoc.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will look to stay unblemished when they host the Western Mustangs in a home-and-home series, kicking off at the York Lions Stadium on Friday, Sept. 22. Action is slated to begin at 8:15 pm.
