LIONS GET OFF THE SCHNEID, DOWN THUNDERBIRDS FOR FIRST WIN OF 2023

Sabrina Fabiano wasted no time making an impact in the first half, notching an early goal for the York University Lions women's soccer team. This opening strike set the tone for the Lions, as they carried that marker to a 3-0 clean sheet of the Algoma Thunderbirds on Saturday afternoon in Sault Ste. Marie.

The win marks their first of the 2023 season, and their 13th straight victory against the Thunderbirds since 2014.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Lions dominated the match essentially from wire to wire, setting the tempo right from the opening minute. In the 16th minute, Fabiano fired a penalty kick past Makayla Townes, putting York up 1-0.
  • As the first half neared its conclusion, Amelia Joseph added to the lead as she potted one past  the Algoma keeper in the 43rd minute, making it 2-0 in favour of the Lions at halftime.
  •  In the second half, Isabel Guido extended the Lions lead to 3-0 in the 73rd minute to solidify the Lions 3-0 victory.
  • The scoreline of 3-0 was perhaps not indicative of the way the game unfolded. Townes faced 18 shots on goal, stopping 15, while Lions keeper Ava Jones saw just two shots on goal, stopping both.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions will continue their winning ways, as they gear up for their upcoming fixtures including a home-and-home matchup against the Western Mustangs. The opening clash of this two-game series will unfold at York Lions Stadium, where the Lions will extend a warm welcome to the Mustangs on Friday, Sept. 22, at 6:00 pm.
