The York University Lions Field hockey team welcomed in the McMaster Marauders for their home opener on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field, and welcomed back a pair of championship teams.
The 2022 OUA championship banner was unveiled in a pre-game ceremony. Also on hand were three players and the coaching staff from York's first OUA (then OWIAA) championship team from 1980.
This year's iteration of the Lions were looking for their second straight win after opening the season with a 2-1 win at Western on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After the Marauders enjoyed some early possession time, the Lions began to gain a territorial edge. The opening quarter ended with the game still scoreless.
- York continued to ramp up the intensity in the second quarter, but McMaster goalie Olivia Renaud stood tall with a couple big early saves.
- The Lions were finally rewarded late in the half off as Natalie Winter fired one home off a setup from a penalty corner to give the Lions a 1-0 lead at the break.
- In the third, the Lions added a pair of tallies to extend their lead. Goals from Elyse Ives and Lexi Hannah put the Lions in front 3-0 after three quarters.
- In the fourth quarter, the Lions added to the lead thanks to Elyse Piper, whose first OUA goal made it 4-0 and capped off an impressive win for the Lions to improve to 2-0.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will head back out on the road next Saturday when they face the Guelph Gryphons. Game time is slated for 11:00 am.
