In the second leg of a weekend home-and-home, the York University women's soccer team faced off against the Western Mustangs in London on Sunday afternoon looking to avenge a disappointing 3-2 loss to the Stangs on Friday night. However, the team fell short, suffering a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Mustangs, their second straight loss to Western this weekend.
The loss drops the Lions 1-3-3 on the season, leaving them with five more games to play as they aim to secure a spot in the playoffs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The opening half saw the Mustangs with the upper hand, registering ten shots to the Lions' one. It was in the 27th minute when Reese Fowler broke the stalemate, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 edge, a lead the Mustangs took into halftime.
- In the second half Lions goalkeeper Ava Jones made crucial saves to keep York in the game despite facing a total of 19 shots in the contest. However, the Mustangs managed to extend their lead in the 40th minute when Mackenzie Bilotta found the back of the net, again assisted by Fowler, making it 2-0 for Western.
- Despite their best efforts, the Lions could not break through the Mustangs defence and find the back of the net, with the game ending 2-0 in favour of Western.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will look to regroup and continue their efforts as they head over to Hamilton, to open another home-and-home series, this one against the McMaster Marauders. The first game is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 29 at 6:00 pm.
