Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

LIONS WIN PHYSICAL AFFAIR, TAKE THREE POINTS FROM GOLDEN HAWKS

The York University Lions men's soccer team hosted a young, upstart Laurier Golden Hawks side looking to earn its first win of the season after an extra-time equalizer from Christian Zeppieri earned them a 1-1 draw against the Hawks on Friday evening.

This one was marked bzy its physicality, as both teams earned a pair of bookings. There were several other challenges from both sides which may have merited such discipline, but the chippiness was prevalent throughout.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Lions wasted little time tickling the twine, as Boston University transfer Ronaldo Marshall potted his first OUA goal to give his new club the lead in the 12th minute.
  • Laurier, however, responded almost immediately, as Adriano Colangelo squared the score at 1-1 in the 15th minute.
  • There weren't many more chances for either team throughout the remainder of the opening half, as both teams leaned back into a defensive posture.
  • The best chance for York was in the 33rd minute where Zeppieri showed some neat individual skill, getting a shot away from the near side despite being surrounded. It was knocked aside by the fingertips of the Laurier keeper, leaving us level at the break.
  • Zeppieri continued his offensive onslaught in the 57th, firing a free kick right off the far post, keeping the score 1-1
  • The Lions wouldn't be denied in the 75th minute, however. Tyler Attardo sent a blistering header past the Hawks keeper off an Agostino Principato cross, giving the Lions the lead.
  • Laurier thought they had drawn even again on an 'Olimpico' goal off a corner kick in added time, but the official ruled there was interference on Lions keeper Christian Colabro, and disallowed the would-be equalizer.
  • The Lions held on from there, pocketing a 2-1 win over the Hawks and winning their first match of the season.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions will stay on their home pitch as they host the other side out of Waterloo, the Waterloo Warriors on Thursday, Sept. 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 pm.
