LIONS EARN SECOND WIN OF THE SEASON WITH DOMINANT OUTING IN OSHAWA

In a commanding display, the York University Lions women's basketball team asserted their dominance, overwhelming the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks with a resounding 93-48 victory in Oshawa, Ont., on Friday evening. 

Three Lions led the way with double-digit scores, spearheaded by Kiara Leveridge's impressive 19-point contribution. Following closely, Gabriella Di Pietro notched 17 points, showcasing her accuracy from beyond the arc with a 5-7 record. Ruqaya Green also made a solid impact, posting 14 points for the team. 

Securing their second victory of the season, the Lions now hold a 2-10 record in the Central Division, trailing behind the Toronto Varsity Blues who stand at 2-9.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Green opened the scoring for the Lions with a quick layup. As the teams found themselves tied at 4-4, the Lions unleashed a dominating 12-0 run that left the Ridgebacks scrambling and forced them into an early timeout. With Leveridge and Bilan Khadar leading the charge for York, accumulating nine and seven points, respectively, the Lions entered the second period firmly in control with a commanding 29-14 lead.
  • Capitalizing on their impressive opening quarter run, the Lions maintained their momentum in the second frame, embarking on yet another impressive 11-2 run. This surge propelled them to a commanding 40-16 lead with 4:58 remaining in the quarter. Demonstrating their prowess, the Lions outshot the Ridgebacks 26-10 in the quarter, securing a dominant 55-24 advantage as they headed into halftime.
  • Having established the tone in the initial half, the second half unfolded in a similar fashion, with the Lions consistently holding their advantage over the Ridgebacks. Demonstrating an unstoppable prowess, the Lions left no room for the Ridgebacks to stage a comeback. York outshot Ontario Tech 22-13 in the third and 16-11 in the final frame, ultimately sealing a resounding 93-48 victory.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions will look to maintain their winning spirit alive, as they wrap up their three-game road trip against the Queen's Gaels in Kingston, Ont. The match-up is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 13, with a 6:00 pm tip-off.
