LIONS LATE PUSH FALLS SHORT IN LOSS TO BADGERS

The York University Lions women's basketball team returned to the Tait McKenzie Centre on Friday night for their first home game of 2024, as they hosted their Central division rivals, the Brock Badgers.

The Lions were looking to build off a dominant victory over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks and earn their third win of the season. Brock, meanwhile, entered Friday undefeated since the turn of the calendar, riding a four-game winning streak

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Lions took a 9-4 lead early in the first quarter, but the visitors responded with a 17-4 run to go up 21-13. They led 24-16 at the end of one quarter.
  • In the second, the Lions cut the lead to four at 31-27, but a 10-0 Brock run put them up by 14. The Badgers led by that same margin at the break, 52-38.
  • Brock continued building on their lead in the third, leading by as many as 23 in the frame, and led 76-55 heading to the fourth.
  • York made a game of it in the fourth quarter, going on an 11-2 run through the first half of the frame to cut the lead to 12. The Badgers built the lead back up to 15 at 84-69, and eventually went onto an 85-75 win over York to move to 10-4 on the season
  • The Lions were paced by 28 points from Kiara Leveridge and 19 from Bilan Khadar. Gabby Di Pietro also poured in nine points in 23 minutes off the bench.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions will remain home for another intra-division battle when they welcome in the McMaster Marauders tomorrow night. Tip-off is at 6:00 pm from Tait McKenzie Centre.
