The York University Lions field hockey team capped off its regular season on Sunday afternoon against the Queen's Gaels on a summer-like October afternoon at Tindall Field in Kingston. York came into the match looking to sweep the home-and-home with Queen's after a convincing 5-0 victory over the Gaels 24 hours ago, while Queen's aimed for a bounce-back on its home turf.Â
The Lions started strong, taking the lead early in the first quarter. Just under three minutes into the game, Tessa Wang found the back of the net with an unassisted marker, giving York a 1-0 advantage. Queen's struggled to create offence early, as York prevented the Gaels from recording a shot on goal in the first half. The Lions headed into halftime with that same 1-0 lead. Â
York extended their lead in the third quarter, thanks to a well-executed play by Jewel Lew. Abby Thompson delivered a precise pass on which Lew converted, making it 2-0 for the visitors. However, Queen's quickly responded four minutes later with a goal by Kate Martin, thanks to a helper by Abigail Kaye, to cut the deficit to 2-1.Â
Â
In the fourth quarter, York regained control of the match. With just over eight minutes left, Kathryn Carlow buried one on another assist by Thompson, restoring York's two-goal cushion and sealing the 3-1 victory.Â
Goalkeeper Sasha Streu – making her third start of the year – stood tall for York, allowing just one Queen's goal, while her Gaels counterpart, Sarah Downes, made eight saves but couldn't keep York's offense at bay.Â
