LIONS SHUT OUT GRYPHONS TO EARN FIRST WIN IN GUELPH SINCE 2008

The York University Lions women's hockey team played the first of a three-game road on Thursday night to face off against the Guelph Gryphons at the Gryphon Centre Arena, looking for their second straight win TMU Bold last Sunday, while also trying to get back to .500 at 2-2 on the young season.

However, to do so, the Lions would need to do something they haven't done in 6,122 days: win in Guelph. Entering Thursday, York had not beaten the Gryphons in The Royal City since Jan. 20, 2008 – a 2-1 overtime win for York with the game-winning goal coming off the stick of Jennifer Halinen on a helper from Justine Jackson 2:29 into the extra frame.

Nearly 17 years later, the Lions erased that script.

The game was a defensive battle right from the start, with both teams unable to find the back of the net through the first two periods. Lions goaltender Emma Wedgewood was stellar between the pipes, making 22 saves in the game, keeping York in it despite Guelph outshooting them 22-18.

With overtime looming, Ava Ricker-Singh had other plans. She took a no-look pass from behind the net by Trynity Turner, walked in and beat Martina Fidel. Her first goal of the season gave the Lions the late lead. The Gryhpons applied some late pressure, but the Lions did a great job getting in shooting lanes and keeping the play to the outside, killing the final eight seconds with the puck pinned in the corner, as they skated away with the 1-0 victory. The win is York's second in a row as they even their record at 2-2 and earn a crucial divisional victory.

LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will have the week off before they head to the nation's capital for games against the Carleton Ravens and Ottawa Gee-Gees, beginning at Carleton on November 1st. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
