The York University Lions men's tennis team put together a solid regular season, going 5-4 in league play, but saved their best tennis for the OUA championships.
As the No. 5 seed, they throttled the McMaster Marauders 7-0 in the quarter-final to advance to the final four. Despite dropping their semi-final to the top seed – and eventual silver medalists – Toronto Varsity Blues, the Lions rebounded to win the bronze medal with another 7-0 victory over the Waterloo Warriors to avenge the loss the Warriors handed them in the 2023 bronze medal match.
And the bronze medal wasn't the only piece of pageantry the Lions pulled in.
York head coach Ken Crosina was named the coach of the year on the men's side, guiding his team to its second bronze medal in three seasons. Crosina is the second Lions head coach to win the award on the men's side after Michael Mitchell was bestowed the honour on three separate occasions (2007, 2009, 2011). This is the fifth time in program history (men & women) that a York coach has earned the award, with Chris Field winning OUA women's coach of the year in 2015.
Additionally, veteran graduating athlete Maxim Tokarev was named the lone York all-star from the championship. The Rostov-on-Don, Russia native won five of his six matches at the championships, taking all but his doubles match in the semi-final. Tokarev was the second York player to be named an all-star in as many years, after Alex Bodor was awarded all-star accolades last season.
