The York University Lions men's hockey team travelled to Oshawa to face the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on Saturday night in the second contest of a home-and-home series and already the third matchup of the year between the two clubs. York was looking to rebound after dropping the latest meeting 4-2 Friday night at Canlan Ice Sports.
The Ridgebacks drew first blood seven minutes into the game. Feeding off passes from Alex Park and Braiden Koran, Matt Wisener put one past Carter Serhyenko for a 1-0 Ridgeback lead. Ontario Tech out-shot York 18-7 in a period where they controlled the puck possession battle. The Ridgebacks would maintain their lead as the game entered the second period.
The second saw nothing on the scoreboard, as both netminders would stand pat as the second period ended with the score still 1-0 in favour of the Ridgebacks.
Due to a roughing after the whistle penalty on the Ridgebacks Alex Drover at the end of the second period, York began the third on a power play. That advantage only lasted fifty-two seconds, as York was caught with too many men on the ice, bringing about 4-on-4 hockey for 1:08.
As fate would have it, the Lions would score the equalizer during that 4-on-four 4 play. Ethan Strik gained possession of the puck after a Serhyenko save and dished it to Klim Georgiev, who shifted past the Ridgebacks defence and fired it through the legs of Ridgeback William Desmarais to tie the game 1-1.
Despite pushes from both teams, neither squad found the go-ahead goal as the game entered overtime still square at 1-1.
Forty-seven seconds into the extra period, it was the Lions who came out on top. With a three-on-two break approaching the Ridgebacks blue line, Lacombe dished the puck to Chase Sandhu, who pitched it right to Keeton Oakley, who fired it over the glove of Desmarais for the game-winner, giving the Lions a thrilling 2-1 road victory.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions travel to Quebec to take the ice against the UQTR Patriotes on Saturday, November 9. Puckdrop is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
