The York University Lions women's hockey team continued their stay in the nation's capital on Saturday, going down the road to Minto Sports Complex to play the Ottawa Gee-Gees. The Lions were coming off a 2-1 overtime victory over the Carleton Ravens, which was their third victory in a row.
The Gee-Gees were rewarded a power play four minutes into the opening period, but the Lions stood strong on the penalty kill. The teams were engaged in a defensive battle throughout the opening twenty minutes, with both goaltenders recording eight saves, keeping the game scoreless after one.
The Lions were gifted a power play of their own early in the second period. However, York couldn't convert and remained down 1-0. Midway through the period, Ottawa went back to the power play, and, this time, the Gee-Gees made the most of their advantage. After York netminder Emma Wedgewood made an initial save, the Gee-Gees recovered the loose puck, with Naomi Morin putting it home, giving Ottawa a 1-0 lead that they would maintain heading into the third.
The Gee-Gees would build on their lead 13 minutes into the final frame. Morin would strike again, this time with an assist from Florence Lessard, to make the game 2-0 in favor of the home team. With just over a minute left in the game, it would be Lessard that put it away, scoring into an empty net to make the final 3-0 Gee-Gees.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions return home to Canlan Ice Sports on Friday, November 8 for a matchup with the Windsor Lancers. Puck drop is set for 7:00 pm.
