LIONS BATTLE BUT FALL SHORT TO LANCERS

Box Score

The York University Lions women's hockey team hosted the Windsor Lancers on a brisk Friday evening at Canlan Ice Sports. The Lions were looking to move back above .500 with their fourth win of the season, while the Lancers were pushing for their sixth victory, aiming to pass the idle Waterloo Warriors for second place in the OUA West.

The first period saw the teams trade power plays. Windsor's Elissa Benjamin was called for hooking at 3:31, followed by York's Makayla Mailhot for tripping at 8:26. Windsor broke the ice with 7:34 left in the first on a goal Emily Eikelboom, with Benjamin recording the lone assist. York's Abby Hicks and Jill Milligan were both sent to the box for penalties late in the period, but the Lancers could not extend their lead.

However, they did just that in the second period, with Madison Hollohan scoring just 3:15 into the frame, with Jaden Cherry and Maggie Peterson drawing the assists. Windsor's Maggie Mitani was assessed a double-minor for head contact at with just over seven minutes left, but the Lions could not take advantage, and trailed 2-0 after 40.

York's Kaitlin Teixeira finally got the Lions on the scoreboard 4:47 into the third, with helpers from Trynity Turner and Abby Hicks, cutting the lead to one. However, Windsor quickly countered with a goal from Jaden Cherry at 30 seconds later, immediately putting the Lancers back up by two. Despite pulling goalie Emma Wedgewood in a final offensive push, Windsor sealed the game with an empty-net goal by Makayla Mailhot with 39 seconds to go, making the final 4-1 in favour of the visitors.

Both goalies, Windsor's Cadence Petitclerc and York's Wedgewood, recorded 21 saves in, with Windsor outshoting York 25-22.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Lions will return to the ice tomorrow evening, hoping to bounce back against the Western Mustangs in the first of back-to-back games between the two clubs. Puck drop is set for 7:00 pm from Canlan.
