The York University Lions women's hockey team hosted the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday evening at Canlan Ice Sports. The Lions sought to recover from a 2-4 road loss to the Lancers, in the first of four home dates to close out the fall term.
The Lions and Golden Hawks played a physical opening period. Both teams had a power play opportunity, but neither could capitalize. Emma Wedgewood and the Lions thwarted several Laurier scoring chances, and get a little luck after a Laurier shot hit the crossbar. That kept the game scoreless after 20.
9:06 into the second frame, Laurier opened the scoring on their power play. After an initial Wedgewood save, Claire Robinson took the rebound and passed it to Abby Glandon who found the back of the net to give the Golden Hawks a 1-0 lead.
The visitors added to their lead just more than three minutes later. After a Kylie Lailberte pass, Ella Jackson dashed through York's zone and put one past Wedgewood to increase their lead to 2-0, an advantage they would take into the third period.
The Lions got on the board 1:45 into the third frame in a rather unconventional way. Nicole York kept a clearing attempt in at the blueline and fired a shot that ricocheted off of Sarah Howell's pad into the air, and found its way into the net. The goal cut York's deficit to one at a 2-1 score.
The Golden Hawks responded with two goals in 15 seconds midway through the period. With 9:11 remaining, Hayley Szymanowski put home an Elle Spencer pass. Right off the faceoff, Emily Olson took a couple passes and fired a slap shot that went through the legs of Wedgewood. The rapid-fire replies increased Laurier's lead to three at 4-1.
York would respond forty seconds after the Olson goal, as Alexa Giantsopoulos scored off an assist from Abby Hicks to make the score 4-2. However, the Lions would get no closer as Laurier would close it out from there to win the game 4-2.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions host the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday, November 24. Puck drop is set for 2:00 pm.
