On a four-game winning streak, the York University Lions men's basketball team looked for their fifth straight victory on Saturday evening on the road, against the Laurier Golden Hawks. The Lions with a one-point victory, earned their fifth-straight win of the season, a feat they have not accomplished since 2006, when the team won six-straight from Nov.11-Dec. 1, 2006.
A huge win for the Lions as the last time they defeated the Golden Hawks was Nov. 16, 2013, adds to the incredible performance and victory that the team put on, on Saturday night. As the race to the playoff continues, the Lions, fourth place in the OUA Central, clinched a playoff position after their Wednesday night victory against the Gryphons.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In another strong performance by the Lions leading Evan Shadkami and Josh Noton, the pair earning 59 combined points, led their team to their fifth straight win of the season. Taking a commanding first quarter lead, 26-14, Shadkami went 4-4 from field goal range and 3-3 three-pointers.
- The Golden Hawks wanted back into the game, as Maxwell Voorpool got his team back in the game with seven points in the second quarter, as the script flipped and the Golden Hawks earned 26 points in the next 10 to bring the game within one. Heading into half, the visiting side was just holding onto their lead 41-40.
- The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair with Laurier gaining some momentum. They earned their biggest lead of the game, 51-43 midway through the third, but two successful free throws from Elias Panagiotopoulos brought the Lions back within six. The Golden Hawks secured the final two points of the quarter and now the lead was in their hands, 62-59.
- Shadkami, with his second 12 point quarter of the game, got the Lions on the board to start the final 10 minutes of action. A short lived three-point lead by Laurier was turned around by a Noton layup, and from there on out it was York holding the lead. Laurier attempted a last second comeback, but York secured the one-point victory on the road, 81-80.
