The York University Lions women's basketball team wrapped up their regular season on Saturday night, hosting the TMU Bold in the second meeting between the two Toronto rivals in four days.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The home side got off to a solid start in this one. York finished the first on an 8-0 run thanks to buckets from Katie Leudy and Bilan Khadar and free throws from Kiara Leveridge and Tianna Bailey. That propelled York to a 22-17 lead after one.
- It was more of the same in the second for the Lions, with balanced scoring once again a theme of the frame. Leveridgeg and Khadar poured in 10 of their 20 second-quarter points, and York led 42-32 at recess.
- The Bold began the second half on an 11-0 run to take a 43-42 lead. Then, the Lions went on an 8-0 run to go back up by seven, 50-43, and would hold a four-point lead heading to the fourth.
- However, in that fourth, aggressiveness on both ends of the court from TMU turned the tide. Offensively, they made just six field goals in the fourth, but went a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line. On defence, meanwhile, they held York to just 3-of-14 from the field and only surrendered nine points, as the Bold came from behind to beat the Lions 75-68 in the season finale.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions are eligible to return their entire team in 2024-25, with not a single player set to graduate. That includes team MVP Kiara Leveridge and a strong, youthful supporting cast of Leudy and Gabriella Di Pietro, among others.
