As the end of the season creeps up on the Lions, the push for the playoffs has become even more important, making regulation wins that much more important. A troublesome season against the TMU Bold who lead their series 0-2 this season, York could not muscle out a win in their third meeting of the season, falling 5-0.
The Lions, who sit with the last playoff spot in the OUA, need wins for more points to extend themselves away from the Ridgebacks who now sit just two points behind. With three home games remaining on the schedule, winning is everything.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Meeting for their third time this season, the Lions and Bold first met at Canlan Ice Sports on Nov. 25, with the Bold winning 2-0. They faced off just four games later at Mattamy Arena, where TMU secured another victory, this time 4-1. Now for their last match up of the year, York was looking for a win in their series, but the Bold held them off.
- TMU controlled the game from the opening face-off, and did not let it go until the final buzzer sounded. Getting their first goal in the first six minutes of the game as Gaby Gareau made her way down the ice before finding the back of the net past Emma Wedgewood. Little action ensued for the remainder of the period as Wedgewood made six comfortable saves to hold the score 1-0 in favour of the hosts.
- In the second period, the Lions took a penalty and the Bold capitalized on their man advantage to extend their lead. Just six minutes later, Payten Kerr, scoring back-to-back, earned her second of the game and TMU led 3-0 into the second intermission.
- Looking to turn things around in the final frame of action, the Lions tried to work their way back into the game but another penalty, led to another power play goal from the Bold. With one more insurance goal and a hat-trick for Kerr, TMU secured a comfortable 5-0 victory.
LOOKING AHEAD:
Only three games remain on the schedule for the Lions, all of which are at home in Canlan Ice Sports. The home finale begins this Saturday, Feb. 10 against the Laurier Golden Hawks. Puck drops at 2:15 pm.
