LIONS WIN SECOND STRAIGHT GAME IN HOME OPENER AGAINST GRYPHONS

The York University Lions field hockey team returned to Alumni Field for their home opener and edged out the Guelph Gryphons in a hard-fought battle on Sunday afternoon. The Lions, coming off a 1-0 victory over the Waterloo Warriors in their season opener, aimed to extend their win streak, while the Gryphons sought their first win after a tie against the TMU Bold in their opener.

The match started with both teams showing aggressive offensive play and tight defensive efforts. Despite multiple attempts from both sides, neither team could break through, resulting in a scoreless first half. The match was physically intense, with York committing four fouls and Guelph adding three of their own by halftime.

With just four minutes left in the game and the outcome seemingly heading towards a draw, York's Elyse Ives made the difference, finding the back of the net with a swift shot. The goal gave the Lions the decisive 1-0 advantage they needed to claim the win.

Looking Ahead: The Lions will look to continue their winning momentum when they return to Alumni Field on Friday, September 27, to take on the Western Mustangs at 7:00 p.m.
