York University Lions women's hockey player Ava Ricker-Singh and men's track and field jumper Tristan Boateng have been named the first York athletes of the week for 2025.
Ricker-Singh, the Lions captain and a fifth-year defender from Smithville, Ont., factored in on both goals in the Lions 2-1 overtime win over the Brock Badgers on Sunday in their first game of the winter term. Ricker-Singh, currently enrolled in the Master of Science program, scored the tying goal with 1:02 remaining in the third period, before setting up rookie Natasha Lange for her first career game-winning goal just 16 seconds into overtime.
Ricker-Singh and the Lions get set for a pair of road games this weekend beginning at Queen's on Friday night in Kingston, before they head to Oshawa to tangle with the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on Saturday.
Boateng, a first-year jumper from Ajax, Ont., took home first place in the men's high jump at the Sharon Anderson Memorial Meet hosted by the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday. The engineering major pulled of a 2.00m leap, finishing 0.05m ahead of second-place Jared Milligan of the Waterloo Warriors. This was Boateng's second straight high jump win after he topped the field at the York Holiday Open in November.
Boateng and the Lions will head to Windsor, the site of this year's OUA and U SPORTS championships, next weekend for the Can-Am Classic, beginning on Friday.
