The York Lions women's volleyball team took the quick trip downtown this evening to open their 2025-26 season, facing off against the TMU Bold. With a clean slate and looking to get off to a hot start, the Lions looked to build upon a ten-win season last year that had them narrowly miss the OUA playoffs.
The Lions got off to a 4-1 start, but TMU recovered and came right back to make it a 5-5 match to make it a more even back and forth affair later on. The Bold grabbed their first lead of the match at 8-7, and led by as many as 3 in the set, before York stormed back to tie the set at 17-17. It became deadlocked late again at 27-27 again before TMU was able to pull away with a two point set win of 29-27 after a final kill. The Lions Quincy Johnson and Victoria Herrington combined to have 8 of the Lions 12 kills in the set, and looked to take their attack to the next step in the second.
TMU picked up right where they left off, jumping out to a 10-1 lead early. Out of a Lions timeout, the Bold continued to pour it on, leading by double digits midway through the set. The Lions went on a 5-0 run with a spurt of energy, but the end result was a crushing 25-11 set loss, pushing the match to set point with TMU up 2-0.
The Lions recovered well, as an early kill and service ace from Yulia Glazko helped them start out 6-2. With the Bold pushing again however, Herrington added two quick kills to hold them off and keep it close at 13-13 midway through. Kianna Drewniak added her seventh kill of the match to then take another narrow lead, but still struggled to hold off the Bold. Johnson dropped two more kills to knot it 22-22, but TMU scored three unanswered to take the match 3-0 ,with a 25-23 third set win.
Looking Ahead: The 0-1 Lions will get a rematch against the TMU Bold tomorrow night on Friday, October 24th. Tipoff is set for 6:00pm again, with coverage on OUA TV.
