Early this morning, the York Lions women's hockey team went down the road to take on the TMU Bold. It was a rematch against the team the Lions had defeated last Friday with a 4-2 victory.
York entered the game in a strong position in the OUA, riding a two-game winning streak with a 3-1 record, while TMU sat at 0-3. This matchup was another opportunity to reaffirm the strength the Lions had been building upon this season and to continue their strong start.
In the first period, both teams came out electric and full of energy, leading to strong defence on both sides of the puck. Many attempts were made, but neither side managed to get on the board first. Physicality defined the game as both York and TMU had players in the box, leaving the score tied at the end of the period.
As the second period began, the defence did not let up. Both teams stayed on each other's tails, preventing any goals from being scored. York goalie Emma Wedgewood had some big saves throughout the period, holding the second-most saves in the OUA. In the final twenty-five seconds, Ginger Fast saw an opportunity when TMU's goalie wasn't hugging the post tightly enough and put York on the board first. Fast's goal not only gave the Lions a 1-0 lead heading into the final period but also made her the number one scorer in OUA women's hockey.
In the last period, the Lions and the Bold maintained the same physicality that had been seen all game. Shots continued to be blocked by both goalies, and the Lions held tightly to their lead. In the final two minutes of the game, Lola Massey found herself alone in the slot and not only pushed the Lions' lead up to 2-0 but also earned her third goal in the OUA. This sealed the Lions' fourth win of the season.
